OVER AND ABOVE OFFERING

“I believe something extra-ordinary is possible!”

Project #5 – Back Parking Lot Construction

Estimated Cost:  $ 254,661.75

Fund Balance:   $ 76,666.55

The costs of this project challenge us to “dig deep” in our “over and above” giving.  If we can help it, we do not want to borrow money or deplete funds that may be needed in an emergency.  We have a window between now and when the project is complete.  To strengthen our enthusiasm, the deacons are encouraging Sunday School classes and groups within the church to plan projects that will provide opportunities for fellowship and involvement as we seek “tackle” this together.  It is our prayer that this effort and the efforts of each class and group will pull us even closer together as we work to see great things accomplished.  To God be the glory!

THE TRIVIA QUESTION

This week’s question:  Who was A. B. Woodruff?

Last week’s question:  A. B. Woodruff describes “a terrible convulsion that shook the church to its very center, and came very near breaking it into atoms.  The difficulty grew and increased until the church was literally torn into two distinct factions, known at that time as the minority and majority.  Hard sayings were indulged, bitter feelings ensued, and the future of the church was exceedingly dark.”  After numerous attempts at resolution, the Bethel Association asked the church to hold a day of fasting and prayer.  Ministers and “brethren” were called in to help the church “lay aside all party spirit and hardness, to forgive one another and unite as a band of Christians in the spirit of meekness.”  The day ended with the members forming a line in front of the church.  While hymns were sung, they went up and down the line giving each other expressions of “mutual forbearance, fellowship, and love.”  What was the conflict about?  Tariff Acts were passed in 1828 & 1832 that adversely affected the economy of the southern states.  Under the leadership of John C. Calhoun, South Carolina voted to “nullify” the federal tariffs.  President Andrew Jackson threatened to send federal troops to SC to enforce their collection.  Congress then passed a compromise bill that called for a reduction of tariffs and South Carolina rescinded its actions.  In Woodruff, loyalties were split between the federal government and the state government.  This issue caused a very serious rift in our church.  A. B. Woodruff goes on to write that “like the ocean after being swept by some grand storm continues to lash and foam and fret long after the storm has died away, so the angry passions that had been raised in this tumultuous strife yielded slowly but steadily to the pressure of brother love which was re-occupying the hearts of those Christians.  Satan was vanquished, but he retired muttering and sullen from a position he once thought was impregnable.”
