OVER AND ABOVE OFFERING

“I believe something extra-ordinary is possible!”

Project #5 – Back Parking Lot Construction

Estimated Cost:  $ 254,661.75

Fund Balance:   $ 74,128.20

The costs of this project challenge us to “dig deep” in our “over and above” giving.  If we can help it, we do not want to borrow money or deplete funds that may be needed in an emergency.  We have a window between now and when the project is complete.  To strengthen our enthusiasm, the deacons are encouraging Sunday School classes and groups within the church to plan projects that will provide opportunities for fellowship and involvement as we seek “tackle” this together.  In that spirit, the deacons will be hosting a Supper and Singing this Saturday night to encourage donations to the parking lot project.  It is our prayer that this effort and the efforts of each class and group will pull us even closer together as we work to see great things accomplished.  To God be the glory!

SATURDAY SUPPER AND SINGING

This Saturday, March 24 * 6:00 pm

Join us for a great time of food, fellowship, inspiration and entertainment.  Sponsored by our deacons, donations will go toward the Back Parking Lot project.  A good time will be had by all.

PARKING LOT UPDATE

We are waiting for Duke Energy to disconnect power from our existing lights in the parking lot before the work can proceed.  Once we lose the use of the back parking lot, we will use the entry way on the S. J. Workman side of the building during the week and for drop off and pick up on Wednesday nights.  On Sundays, we encourage everyone who is able to do so to park at the High School so that our front parking spaces will be left for visitors, the elderly and the handicapped.

THE TRIVIA QUESTION

This week’s question:  A. B. Woodruff describes “a terrible convulsion that shook the church to its very center, and came very near breaking it into atoms.  The difficulty grew and increased until the church was literally torn into two distinct factions, known at that time as the minority and majority.  Hard sayings were indulged, bitter feelings ensued, and the future of the church was exceedingly dark.”  After numerous attempts at resolution, the Bethel Association asked the church to hold a day of fasting and prayer.  Ministers and “brethren” were called in to help the church “lay aside all party spirit and hardness, to forgive one another and unite as a band of Christians in the spirit of meekness.”  The day ended with the members forming a line in front of the church.  While hymns were sung, they went up and down the line giving each other expressions of “mutual forbearance, fellowship, and love.”  What was the conflict about?

Last week’s question:  What was the name of the first mission group for young people at our church?  Mary Collins Green states in her History of First Baptist Church, Woodruff that “According to well-preserved church records, the Sunbeams were the first missions group for young people to be organized.”  In the 1960’s the name “Sunbeams” was changed to “Mission Friends.”
