THE FIVE LANGUAGES OF APOLOGY

In The Five Languages of Apology by Gary Chapman and Jennifer Thomas, we learn that people hear apologies differently.  There are 5 main components that people listen for to see if an apology is sincere:  Expressing Regret, Accepting Responsibility, Making Restitution, Genuinely Repenting, and Requesting Forgiveness.  If these components are important in human relationships, are they also important in our relationship to God?  Join with us this Sunday as we begin a series of messages about sincerity, accountability and forgiveness.

Over and Above

“I believe something extra-ordinary is possible!”

In January of 2002, our church established the Over and Above Fund.  We had recently been freed by God's grace from financial debts incurred through a series of loans for sanctuary renovation, roofs and air-conditioning for the educational buildings.  We decided that instead of dividing our resources trying to do many large projects at the same time, that we would place the items in a priority order that could be re-evaluated and adjusted in an emergency.  We would save and work toward whatever was 1st on the list and then move on to the next item.  You have faithfully contributed and God has been gracious!  Since February of 2005, we have been working on the 5th Over and Above project – the Back Parking Lot of the church.  This past July, the church approved a set of plans drawn by K. B. Sellars Engineering, LLC.

At our church conference this Sunday night, we will hear a recommendation from the Grounds Committee and the Deacons.  The meeting will be held after the Evening Service so there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.  Everyone is urged to be present for this important conference in the life of our church.  We will have a special called conference the next Sunday morning, March 4, to vote on the recommendation without discussion.

The plan we adopted in July calls for us to remove the existing materials.  Our present tar and gravel lot was provided in 1961 by the SC Department of Highways.  We later reimbursed them for the materials that were used.  It would cost around $120,000.00 to put asphalt down on top of the present tar and gravel, but the end result would be a parking lot that would erode very quickly.  Instead we voted to pull up the existing material, completely redo the entrance to the back parking lot on the Cross Anchor Road side, replace the white posts with curbing, and set up a traffic pattern that would help us to be as safe as possible.

Several contractors were given a set of plans to bid on this project.  The Grounds Committee and Deacons are recommending that we employ Joe Vaughn of Vaughn Curbing Company, LLC to oversee the work of the entire project.  His bid was substantially lower than any other bid and we have confidence that he will do a great job.

In our discussions about lighting for the parking lot, we considered using Duke Energy to supply the lights.  They will do this without any up-front cost, but it would add over $600.00 to our power bill each month.  The Grounds Committee and Deacons are recommending that we purchase our own lights from Link Electric, Inc.  This will add to the up-front cost of the project but without the increase to our monthly bill.

Asphalt is sometimes called “black gold.”  The prices in our present bid are good until the first of March.  If the church gives its approval, work would begin immediately.  Prices are expected to rise dramatically as the weather gets warmer and are not expected to be as low as they are now in the foreseeable future.

The projected total cost of the project (with funds added for unexpected contingences) is $254,661.75.  The Deacons are recommending that we attempt to raise as much money as possible between now and when the project is complete.  If we do not have enough money in the Over and Above Fund at the end of the project, we would borrow from the money we have set aside in the Capital Needs Fund and repay that to ourselves for future projects.  This would keep us from having to pay out more interest than the interest we are receiving on the funds we have at the bank.

If the weather is good, the project is estimated to take between 6 to 8 weeks.  We will not have the use of our back parking lot during that time.  We will use the entry way on the S. J. Workman side of the building during the week and for drop off and pick up on Wednesday nights.  On Sundays, we would encourage everyone who is able to do so to park at the High School so that our front parking spaces would be left for visitors, the elderly and the handicapped.

This project is expensive, but it will dramatically improve our church’s facilities, create a positive impression of our church’s grounds, provide room for expansion, facilitate community events, and address important safety concerns.  Our goal is to bring glory to God.  If you have questions or concerns feel free to call the church office or to talk with a member of the Grounds Committee.  It is chaired by Kemp Smith and includes Mike Elliott, Jimmy Fortner, Bob Hix, Zane Orias and Randy Rhodes.  Please plan to be present this Sunday night so that we can seek the Lord’s wisdom together as a congregation.

THE TRIVIA QUESTION

This week’s question:  Our church was the first church in this community.  Our earliest records go back to September 16, 1787.  Which church, in existence today, is the second oldest church in our community?

Last week’s question:  One Sunday morning, worshippers were greeted by ashes and smoke – Woodruff Senior High School was on fire.  That morning our church voted to offer our facilities to the high school until more permanent arrangements could be made.  Classes were held here at our church and in portable trailers at the other schools.  What day did the high school burn down?  January 11, 1987

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

Throughout the year, groups serve on a rotating basis, to prepare a meal the day of the funeral when there is death in our church membership.  Please call the church office if you would like to be part of this ministry.

American Cancer Society

RELAY FOR LIFE

Would you like to be part of the team from our church that works to raise funds to fight cancer?  Information packets are available in the church office.  This year’s Relay will begin on June 8 and will be held at Woodruff Middle School.
