Matthew 7:24-27

if you've gone to church all your life like me, i'm sure you've probably heard about the wise and foolish builders. maybe you even know the song.

"the wise man built his house upon the rock
the wise man built his house upon the rock
the wise man built his house upon the rock
and the rains came tumbling down
the rains came down and the floods came up
the rains came down and the floods came up
the rains came down and the floods came up
and the house on the rock stood firm
the foolish man built his house upon the sand
" "
" "
and the rains came tumbling down
the rains came down and the floods came up
" "
" "
and the house on the sand went SPLAT ( or whatever you want to say)

i never really knew the importance of that song until a few months ago when i had a realization (gotta love it when that happens). there's also a song by Big Tent Revival called Two Sets of Joneses i think which talks about this same concept of building relationships on the Rock which is Jesus Christ. there are two married couples in the song by BTR. one of the couples puts money and careers and material things as the basis of their relationship. the other couple has their foundation in Christ putting him before everything else. the second couple might not have very nice things and an abundance of things but their relationship is obviously stronger than that of the first couple.

its like this with any relationship. if two people haven't built their foundations in Christ and stay true to that by growing in their relationship with Christ and serving Him, then there is great danger for that relationship. its very unstable and can be easily washed away by a storm. but, with the wisdom and strength that Christ gives, the couple that has that will persevere through the rough times.

i have some great friends, but i thank God for those true Christian ones because i know that we have this strong and sometimes unspoken bond between us that i don't have but strive to have with my other non-Christian or searching/somewhat lost friends.

i look at all the relationships around me and some in the past that even i have been involved in that have fallen through because that foundation in Christ wasn't there. be careful what you center your relationships around with people.

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."
Matt. 7:24

*           *            *              *

a lot of awesome things have happened since i've been at college and i know if i didn't have God in my life, i wouldn't have recognized them or i wouldn't have had the courage to go out and find them. BSU has allowed me to meet a lot of great Christian people who from what i've seen truly have God in their lives. i've also made some very close Christian friends who are my age who i don't know what i would do if i didn't have them. everything has certainly not been perfect (i managed to lose my ID and key yesterday which is an expensive loss among other disappointing things) but its been a whole lot easier because of God's undeniable presence in my life. and as i write this the sun is coming out so i don't have to walk back to my dorm room in a downpour which i would have a few minutes ago. i love you all and hope to be able to see some of you in a few weeks or whenever i get a chance to come home.

pray that we all won't neglect our quiet time every day.

love,

laura
