THE TRIVIA QUESTION

Last week’s question:  Where did the name “Bethelcome from and what does it mean?  Our church has had 5 different names.  In the early years we called ourselves - The Church of Christ on Jamey’s Creek, Woodruff Meeting House, and Shackleford’s Meeting House.  In 1798 we became known as The Baptist Church of Bethel. The name “Bethel” is first encountered in the Book of Genesis used to describe the area near where Abraham placed his tent.  In Genesis 28, Jacob gives the place it’s name after he has a dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending.  Bethel” means “House of God.”  The Bethel Association, formed in 1789, was one of the only associations in SC.  It was made up of churches across the Upstate.  Our church became the regular meeting place for the Association, so in 1798 our church changed its name to Bethel Baptist Church.  This remained our name until 1911 (113 years) when the church voted to change its name to “First” Baptist.

This week’s question:  Who was A. B. Woodruff?

EXTENDED SUNDAY SCHOOL

Visitors Needed!

Each month people from our church visit those who are ‘homebound’ and not able to attend a Sunday School class.  They carry with them Home Life, Mature Living, Open Windows, Sunday School materials, and other expressions of love.  At present, we need a few more folks who would be able to join this wonderful visitation ministry.  Please call Mary Dell Scott or the church office.  Also, if you or someone you love would like to receive these monthly visits, please call us.
